Mining sector development
SGAB staff specializes in the execution of large integrated projects for strengthening and restructuring the mining sector in countries in which the mineral potential is not well utilized, or where mining sector performance improvements are required. Such work has been performed by SGAB staff in many countries, including: Argentina, Bolivia, Ecuador, Nicaragua, Ghana, Tanzania, Zambia, Uganda and Mozambique.

Geoscientific investigations
SGAB expertise is built upon a long tradition and wide experience in geoscientific investigations. Our activities include fieldwork, data collection, analysis and interpretation, applying advanced mapping, database and Geographical Information Systems technologies.

Environmental and sustainability management
SGAB’s environmental and sustainability management expertise is built upon consulting activities in the mining industry. We also work extensively in other industries as well as with public institutions, where our ample in-house knowledge makes it possible to undertake complicated assignments.

Geographical Information Systems (GIS)
SGAB offers advanced services within Geographical Information Systems, both for stand-alone solutions, and as integrated parts of multidisciplinary projects. GIS commonly forms an integrated part of projects executed within the areas described above.

Review of the EIA for the Conga Project, Peru

SGAB was retained by the WWF (NL) to review the EIA of the controversial Newmont/Buenaventura/IFC led Conga AU/Cu project in Cajamarca, Peru. The review found significant weaknesses in the EIA related to both content and process, and proposes how it should be improved. It further identifies the need to perform a strategic environmental and socio-economic study of mining activities in the Cajamarca region. The full report can be downloaded here.

Environmental and Social Statement for LKAB

SGAB will lead the work to establish an Environmental and Social Statement for the major Swedish iron ore producer LKAB’s activities in the Svappavaara region of Northern Sweden. The work is multidisciplinary and draws upon technical, environmental and socio economic expertise and experience. In this work, SGAB is cooperating with White Architects.

Communication & media strategy for Mongolian mining sector

SGAB has been awarded the contract for the World Bank project to assist the Mongolian Ministry of Mineral Resources and Energy (MMRE) in formulating a Communication Strategy for the mining sector. Our local partners are Mongol Mass Media and SICA, a polling company. The project involves a stakeholder mapping, a survey of attitudes to mining and quality of communication by the MMRE, various media support services to the MMRE and media production in print, film, web, applying the revised communication strategy.

Support to Uganda DGSM, Labs section, in refurbishment, training project

A project for the Ugandan Dept. of Mines and Geological Survey (Labs and Seismology Sections), under the SMMRP, has been started. SGAB is supporting DGSM in the refurbishment of their assay and petrological labs, and extension of the seismological network. The project involves assistance in lab design, AAS and XRF training, support to construction of seismological stations and support in international training programs.

Successful completion of the Small-Scale Mining Curriculum project in Papua New Guinea

The Technical Assistance for the Small-Scale Mining Curriculum Development and Training Project in Papua New Guinea has been successfully completed, in December 2010. The key achievement was building, equipping and developing curricula for a small-scale mining school located in Wau (together with Projekt-Consult GmbH).
